That sense of motion touches much of Bottle It In, an album that sees Vile extending his sonic vocabulary with more complex arrangements and drawn-out songs that wash by like changing scenery viewed from the passenger seat. By this point, Vile has settled into the finer points of his persona, that of the stony but observant psychic drifter, grinning through his disarming rock repetitions with equal parts humor, bite, and guitar solos. He wears all of it confidently on the songs where he can explore, notably the almost ten-minute two-chord ramble of \"Bassackwards.\" The song stealthily accumulates layers of synths, piano, and guitar textures as Vile strolls in a disoriented lyrical fog, evoking images of beaches, time passing, and stilted attempts at communicating. That the several songs stretching past the ten-minute mark can stay engaging and even exciting at such lengths is a testament to how comfortable the songwriter has grown in his craft. While it doesn't make for a smooth listen from beginning to end, Hynes and his expanded cast of collaborators (who include the ubiquitous Caroline Polachek of Chairlift, Friends' Samantha Urbani, Dirty Projectors' David Longstreth, and Clams Casino) hit enough highs to make the album worth trying to figure out. Even if one never does truly figure it all out, there is enough graceful melancholy and tuneful sadness on display to make the album a bracing, late-night listen with plenty of songs that will stick around in memory banks and on breakup mixes. The songs that work the best are the most focused, like \"You're Not Good Enough,\" the jumping Afro-pop disco jam \"Uncle ACE, and \"Always Let You Down,\" where Hynes doesn't let the soft focus arrangements get in the way of the melodies. His oddball sonic choices, like huge-sounding gated drums, '90s TV theme keyboard settings, and Polachek's showy warbling also don't usually get in the way, though \"Chosen\" might give anyone who doesn't worship at the altar of Phil Collins some seriously queasy feelings. And \"Time Will Tell\" comes off like an unholy blend of Bruce Hornsby and mid-period Prince thanks to some stately piano and squirmy sexual come-ons. Some of his choices are fairly brilliant, too, like how \"Clipped On\" is a brilliant mashup of Naughty by Nature and PM Dawn, or how \"On the Line\" takes the electro-pop of the previous album, feeds it through cheap Casios and too many Seagram's Coolers, then ends up with the most emotionally powerful song on the record. It also features lovely vocals from Urbani, who proves to be the ideal duet partner for Hynes since her sweet croon matches his perfectly. In the end, the album's head-scratching moments are outweighed by the near-brilliant ones, those weird juxtapositions of styles and oddly emotional times that make everyone from Solange, Basement Jaxx, and Britney want to work with Dev Hynes. Yorke never attempts to abandon his fixation on pre-EDM electronica -- at this point, his affection for turn-of-the-millennium intelligent dance music could almost qualify as classicist -- but there's a scuffed warmth to much of this album, with the warped waves of keyboards gently gliding into a rhythm later articulated by a loop. Such aural sleights of hand never call attention to themselves but neither does the album as a whole. Tomorrow's Modern Boxes is deliberately underwhelming, an old-fashioned grower that doesn't startle upon first listen but rather slowly unfolds. Even then, the album is stubbornly subtle, with Yorke exploring the space between gaps, not the chasm itself. Less charitable listeners could call it mood music and they wouldn't be wrong, because Yorke and producer Nigel Godrich are so controlled, they offer variations of a theme instead of a wide palette. When it does enter, her vulnerable vocal delivery, combined with vexed lyrics that are both confessional and observational in nature, often sounds like a private, handwritten letter that, once out of her system, she'll immediately crumple up and leave burning in an ashtray. At the end of \"Golden Dream,\" for instance, she rants \"Stupid, stupid me\" for a cathartic 30 seconds. She's joined on most of the album by drums and bass, giving further texture and volume to her own forthright presence. One of a couple exceptions to that is the aforementioned \"Let's Find an Out,\" which has especially light drums and percussion, in contrast to the crashing cymbals of certain other moments on the record. That opens up space for spare keyboards and anxious rumination. Even the lusher, more driving tracks like \"Pristine\" and \"Full Control\" still feel intimate, though. A little raspier than before and as remarkably emotive as always, it's so full of living that no flashy accompaniment is needed on songs such as the title track. One of the album's briefest and most beautiful moments, \"Wanderer's\" heart-melting harmonies grace a song that could be an eternal lament handed down for generations. Throughout the album, Marshall feels completely in command of the folk, blues, and soul that have lurked around the margins of her music since the beginning and made up the heart of The Greatest. Even as she says goodbye on almost every track, from \"Me Voy\"'s sultry regret to the serenely devastating \"Horizon,\" Wanderer returns to sounds that are in her blood. She subtly modernizes these traditions while tapping into their timeless power: \"Black\" is another in her series of songs about friends who have died, and the way Marshall contrasts folk- and blues-based mythologizing with a very modern streak of survivor's guilt makes it one of her most spellbinding. \"Robbin Hood,\" with its vicious cycle of literal and spiritual theft, could have been written in the shadow of the Great Depression or the Great Recession. Sunbathing Animal began the process with great success, and Human Performance shows that the band is just as vital and alive when it dials the intensity (way) down, cleans up some of the messy parts, and generally grows up in all the right ways. It's a career-building move to be sure, one that for most bands is the first step in their inevitable demise.
